Played at Guru Nanak Sports Ground Weather: Cold but Bright
A strong 13 man squad this week with a debut for T McCann. The game started well, within 2 minutes our first chance came with a good through ball bouncing up and Tommy Vine putting his head in where boots were high, he headed the ball downwards, ran onto the ball and slotted it past the oncoming keeper, 1-0 up. The opposition now became settled and the game became an open affair with chances being spurned at either end. On 15 minutes a long pass from Danny Barham found Tommy Vine unmarked between two central defenders. He ran through and finished neatly in the corner, 2-0. Platt then took the game to us and hit the ball into the box from a short corner. It bounced ominously around in the six yard box when a player struck it which forced an excellent save from Tony but the second attempt was scrambled over the line, 2-1. On 25 minutes a scramble in the box ended with Platt scoring only to be ruled offside by the linesman, this was the wake-up call we needed. The football that had deserted us now returned with some excellent movement and use of the ball that forced a corner on the near side. The ball was whipped into the back post where a Platt defender headed it back across goal to an on-rushing Michael Watts who finished with a side foot in the middle of the goal, 3-1. We continued to play football in patches and our defence coped admirably with Platt United’s forwards threat. Just before half time some good one touch football around the opposing penalty area resulted in Ryan finishing with a slotted side foot finish to the far post,
Half time 4-1.
The second half started as the first finished with us looking dangerous going forward and it wasn’t long before Diljit’s surging run into the box resulted in him being pushed from behind, penalty. Up stepped Tommy Vine who sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 5-1. 10 minutes into the second half saw Danny Barham replaced by Terry McCann and Studley replaced by Dawid Baranowski. Terry McCann’s next contribution saw him take on four defenders Messi style, he cut the ball back into the six yard box for Tommy Vine to score his fourth goal to make it 6-1. We then went walkabouts and lost concentration for 10 minutes which saw us caught out by the long ball, 6-2. Michael Watts continued the game in majestic form moving to left back, the ball broke just outside the 18 yard box, he looped a speculative shot over the keeper into the far corner, 7-2. Again we thought everyone could score schoolboy football style and push people from the back on which left a hole in central defence which was exploited by the substitute of Platt United, 7-3. In the last 10 minutes of the game chance after chance went begging until 5 minutes from the end Michael Watts completed his hat trick with a simple tap in, 8-3. The 8 goals scored were comforting but the three conceded against a poor Platt United side, bottom of our league were somewhat disappointing. Much sterner tests will come in the games to follow. We are now up to third in the table.
